Tuesday, November 18th | From Quito to the Amazon Rainforest

Upon arrival at the Quito International Airport, you will be greeted by one of our friendly La Selva representatives at the National Departure area. They will assist you with the check-in process and provide you with a short briefing about your upcoming journey.

After a 30-minute commercial flight to Puerto Francisco de Orellana “El Coca,” our representative will escort you in a private vehicle to our office located along the Napo River pier. From there, you’ll embark on a scenic two-hour motorized canoe ride down the river, beginning an unforgettable experience in the Amazon rainforest. We’ll provide you with a box lunch and extra drinks for this leg of the trip.

Once the motorized canoe ride is complete, you’ll arrive at La Selva’s main dock, where the final leg of your journey to the lodge will be completed in a paddle canoe. Our staff will transport all other luggage, so you only need to worry about your carry-on and camera equipment.

Upon arrival at the lodge, you’ll be welcomed by our manager with a refreshing beverage, snacks, and a brief overview of your stay at La Selva. After some rest and time to unpack, one of our knowledgeable Naturalist Guides will provide basic information about the tropical rainforest, the Amazon, and how La Selva operates. This will equip you with a better understanding of the rainforest and help you make the most of your stay.

Later in the day, you’ll embark on a guided tour of the Matapalo Charapa Trail. This trail was named after the famous Strangler fig (Ficus sp), one of the many remarkable trees you’ll encounter during this short walk. Your Naturalist Guides will point out the flora and fauna along the trail, including mahogany trees over 400 years old. As the time of day allows, you’ll witness the transition between diurnal and nocturnal animals while basking in the soft natural light shining through the canopy.

This first day of your Amazonian adventure will give you a glimpse of the incredible experiences that await you!

Wednesday, November 19th | The Observation Tower & Garzacocha Lake

After a 15-minute walk, the observation tower comes into sight, soaring an impressive 120 ft above the forest floor. Your Naturalist and Native guides, with the help of a sighting scope, will show you colorful birds enjoying the canopy and maybe even certain primates.  After another 30-minute walk from the tower, we reach Mandi Cocha. This small lake has different vegetation and landscapes displaying the beauty of the flooded forest. With a little bit of luck, our guests might spot the famous giant otters that make their home nearby. This endangered species is difficult to find, but during this visit, there’s a chance we might see them!

Later, we depart to explore Garzacocha Lake, one of the most beautiful lakes in the Ecuadorian Amazon. This is one of several opportunities to spot several different species of monkeys and birds. Sometimes, huge groups of squirrel monkeys join families of capuchin monkeys to look for food. Howler monkeys also like to spend the late afternoon around the lake. The hoatzin, a large unique bird found only in pristine Amazon environments, is very easy to spot. All you need is a flashlight and your camera to see the jungle come alive at night.  Amphibians, insects, reptiles, birds, and nocturnal mammals may be seen wherever your guides take you.

Here, hundreds of parrots and parakeets gather to eat the mineral-rich soil, which is a vital part of their diet. Don’t forget your binoculars to truly capture the moment and witness the colorful spectacle up close.

Next, you’ll visit the indigenous community of Pilchi, where you’ll learn about the ways of life of the first nations of the Amazon. Your Naturalist Guides will share insights on everything from their dress and diet to their cooking methods and how they use the forest’s resources in their daily lives. It’s an incredibly unique, fascinating, and fun experience that you won’t soon forget. Don’t be shy to ask questions and try some of the traditional drinks and food – the locals love to share their ancestral knowledge and culture.

After a delicious lunch, you’ll head out to the Coto Trail. This fantastic walk takes you from the lodge to the edge of Garza Cocha Lake. In the afternoon, the soft rays of sunlight make this walk an unforgettable experience, and the perfect opportunity to take in the beauty of the forest. Your guide will point out and explain all of the fascinating creatures you come across, while our native guide will show you some of the medicinal plants that have been used for thousands of years. A canoe ride back to the lodge at dusk will provide you with a chance to see Caymans, bats, and other nocturnal wildlife in and around the lake, bringing this activity to a fantastic conclusion.

In the evening, our manager will provide you with all the necessary information regarding your departure procedures for the next morning.
